USEFUL INFORMATION

Many common illnesses can be treated by over the counter remedies. Your local pharmacists are excellent at recommending the most suitable treatments for these.

It's useful to always have the following in your medicine cabinet at home. All medicines should be stored in a suitably safe place, out of reach of children:

1) Paracetamol (Calpol for children) - for pain relief/temperature
2) Ibuprofen (Neurofen for children) - for pain relief/inflammation
3) Antihisatmine - for allergy/hayfever
4) Simple linctus for coughs
5) Plasters for minor cuts
6) Dioralyte sachets - for dehydration from diarrhoea/vomiting
7) Imodium/milk of magnesia or alternative - for stomach upsets

If symptoms worsen or are associated with other symptoms please contact the surgery.

www.besttreatments.co.uk is a health website for patients, which includes in-depth information on more than 100 common conditions, from depression to cancer to heart attacks.

For example, you can find out the best way to lower your blood pressure, manage your child's asthma and ease your back pain. It tells you in plain English about the causes of the symptoms of your medical condition and help you understand how it might affect your life.

Access to the website is free. Promoted by the BMJ.
